M. Belmonte, a former Olympic gold medalist, would be honoured to carry the Spanish flag at the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
On May 18, as the Spanish government relaxed limitations imposed during the coronavirus outbreak, the 29-year-old athlete returned to training in Barcelona.

After making her Olympic debut in Beijing in 2008, M. Belmonte hopes to compete at her fourth Olympics in Tokyo in 2020.
Two of her medals at London 2012 were silver, but in Rio 2016 she won gold in the 200-meter butterfly and bronze in the 400-meter individual medley.
This is the highest honour that an Olympic athlete can receive, and yet I have missed the Opening Ceremony in each of the last three Olympics I have participated in.

M. Belmonte predicted that swimmers will be able to attend the Opening Ceremony at Tokyo 2020, despite the fact that swimming competition would begin the day after the ceremony.
Born in Spain on November 10th, 1990, swimmer M. Belmonte has won multiple international titles. She is widely regarded as the best Spanish swimmer of all time and made history as the first Spanish woman to win an Olympic gold medal in swimming.
In the short course versions of the 200-meter butterfly, 400-meter individual medley, and 800-meter freestyle, she holds the world record. She formerly held the world records in the short course 400-meter freestyle and the 1500-meter freestyle.
She won the gold medal in the 200-meter butterfly and the bronze medal in the 400-meter individual medley at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
