A. Popescu of Romania finished second in the women’s épée category, behind China’s Sun Yiwen with a score of 11-10. This is Romania’s first Olympic medal.
Thirty-six-year-old A. Popescu earned 20 medals at European and global championships, a gold medal with the team at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
A. Popescu Olympic Career
Robert Glăncă, a Romanian swimmer, will compete in the men’s 100-meter backstroke final, while David Popovici, also from Romania, has qualified to race in the men’s 200-meter freestyle final.
In the women’s épée fencing final, People’s Republic of China’s SUN Yiwen prevailed against Romania’s A. Popescu, a five-time Olympian, 11-10 (OT).
A. Popescu tied the score at 10-10 with three seconds remaining to proceed to overtime but Sun soon scored the winning point in the deciding period.
At the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Sun won a bronze medal as an individual and a silver medal with her team, completing her collection of Olympic medals.
Despite being a heavy favourite in each of her five Olympic appearances, A. Popescu has never won an individual gold medal. In 2016, she helped her team win the Olympic gold.
When Estonia’s Katrina Lehis competed against Russia’s Aizanat Murtazaeva in fencing, she prevailed 15-8, earning the bronze medal. In the second quarter, with the score 4-3 in favour of her opponent, Lehis won the next five points to take a lead she would not relinquish.

While Italy and France have won the most fencing medals at the Olympics in the past, many countries earned their first fencing medals at the 2020 Games.
While male Japanese fencers brought home the sport’s first gold medal for their country, the United States and Estonia created history in the women’s competitions. After collecting seven medals in Rio, Russian fencers took home the most of any nation.
A. Popescu is a fencer who has competed for Romania. She has participated in the Summer Olympics on multiple occasions (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020).
