A. Focken, is a German freestyle wrestler. She was born on May 10, 1991. In 2014, she triumphed as world champion in the 69-kilogram weight class, while in 2013, she took bronze at the European Championships in the 67-kilogram division. She took home the gold at the Tokyo Summer Olympics of 2020.
In 1996, she got her start in the sport with the help of her dad, Hans-Georg Focken.

In 2020, she competed in the women’s 76 kilogramme division at the Individual Wrestling World Cup in Belgrade, Serbia, and came away with the gold medal.
In 2021, she triumphed at the Poland Open in Warsaw, Poland, taking home the gold medal in her category.

On Mat A at the Makuhari Messe Hall on August 2, German A. Focken won the 76kg gold medal by defeating Team USA’s Adeline Gray (silver) by a score of 7-3. China’s QIAN Zhou and Turkey’s Yasemin Adar both took third place in the same competition.
Second-seeded A. Focken jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in the championship match. Gray rallied back and made a match of it, but ultimately she was unable to join Helen Maroulis as the second U.S. woman to win a gold medal in women’s wrestling.
A. Focken commented, “It’s crazy, it’s unbelievable,” when she won gold for her performance. I’ve hoped for this for a long time and put in a lot of hard work to make it a reality. We are in the midst of an unbelievable situation. I need some time before I can accept this.
A. Focken (GER) has finished in first place many times throughout her career. Only the 2014 World Championships gold and other first-place finishes at European Championships stood out among those. But winning an Olympic medal is the pinnacle of any athlete’s career. Focken believed she had reached the pinnacle of her career when she won gold in the Tokyo Games earlier this year.
She isn’t the only Olympic winner to call her quits this year; Greco-Roman 77 kilogramme (154 pound) champion Tamas LORINCZ (HUN) has also opted to end his spectacular career.
In addition to these two, Olympians Cenk ILDEM (TUR), Daulet NIYAZBEKOV (KAZ), and Elmurat TUSMADAROV (UZB) have also declared their retirement. Frank STAEBLER (GER) won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics.
Last Words
A. Focken, who is due to have her first child in May 2022, is joining the German Wrestling Federation to advance the sport of wrestling for women in Germany. Even though she’s retiring, she knows she’ll miss playing sports.
